Multiple accident insurance policies in Sweden: can you claim from each?

One accident may be covered by several Swedish policies. Learn which payments can be combined and how to find cover through work, a union or a sports club.

Yes, you can receive compensation from more than one Swedish accident insurance policy for the same accident. Compensation for permanent injury may be paid by several insurers, while the same actual medical expense or other outlay cannot be reimbursed more than once. To know where to claim, check both when each policy applies and which benefits it includes.

You may have taken out accident insurance yourself and also be covered by a group policy through your trade union or employer. Both can be valuable. But there are three separate questions:

  1. Do you have two policies?
  2. Do both cover this particular accident?
  3. Can the specific benefit you are claiming be paid under both?

According to Konsumenternas Försäkringsbyrå, you need to report the injury to each potentially relevant insurer yourself. This does not happen automatically.

Permanent injury compensation and expenses work differently

Medical disability, medicinsk invaliditet, means a permanent reduction in bodily function, such as lasting restricted movement after an injury. The assessment concerns that impairment, independently of its effect on your ability to work. Compensation depends on factors including the assessed degree of disability and the sum insured. It is not reimbursement of what you spent on treatment. This is why permanent injury compensation may be payable under several policies covering the injury.

Economic disability, ekonomisk invaliditet, means a permanent reduction in your ability to work. This benefit is not included in every policy and has specific eligibility conditions. The Swedish term does not simply mean that an accident has cost you money. Konsumenternas explains the two types of disability compensation.

Type of payment Can several policies pay, and what should you check?
Medical disability compensation Yes, if each policy's conditions are met. Check: the sum insured, assessed disability percentage, age rules and exclusions.
Actual medical, treatment and travel expenses The same expense is not reimbursed more than once. Check: which expenses qualify and whether they have already been paid by someone else.
A fixed payment, for example for a hospital stay It depends on the benefit's terms. Check: what the payment is intended to cover and whether payments from other policies affect it.

The distinction between disability compensation and reimbursement of expenses is also set out in Konsumenternas' accident insurance guidance.

A fixed amount is not automatically payable alongside benefits from other policies. For example, Folksam's group accident insurance terms effective from January 2026 describe the hospital stay benefit as a flat-rate payment towards costs. Those terms also restrict cost payments where compensation is available elsewhere. See Folksam's terms on hospital stays and cost reimbursement.

Read what the payment actually covers. A set amount per hospital day and reimbursement of a patient fee use different payment models, but both still need to be checked against the terms.

How to find the insurance you already have

Start with your own policy schedules and the insurers' online account areas, often called Mina sidor. Look for accident cover within a combined sickness and accident policy too. Bank payments and insurance emails can help you identify contracts you have forgotten about.

Then check cover you may have through others:

  • Your trade union: ask membership services to confirm which policies actually cover you. Distinguish between included cover, temporary introductory offers and policies you must sign up for or pay for separately. Unionen, for example, describes both included insurance and personal insurance members can take out. Unionen's insurance overview.
  • Your employer: ask HR or payroll for the insurer, agreement number and insurance certificate. Ask them to distinguish any group accident policy from occupational injury cover provided under a Swedish collective agreement, kollektivavtal. A collective agreement is an agreement between an employer or employers' organisation and a trade union; insurance benefits depend on the applicable arrangements. Occupational injury insurance is not the same as accident insurance covering everyday life outside work. Afa Försäkring explains injuries during leisure time.
  • Your club or sports federation: ask the office what personal injury cover applies to you. Request an insurance certificate and confirmation of the activities and participants covered. Folksam says club members often have accident insurance within their sporting activities, but that does not make every membership comprehensive cover. Folksam's information on sports insurance.

Also check whether you are insured through a partner's group policy. Rely on confirmed enrolment and an insurance certificate, not simply on the fact that partner cover is available.

Working hours, leisure time or around the clock?

Two accident policies overlap only where both cover the event. One example is the difference between a policy providing cover around the clock and Folksam's Medlemsolycksfall fritid, a member accident policy for leisure time. The latter defines a leisure-time injury as an accident injury that is not regarded as an occupational injury. Your insurance certificate specifies the scope of your individual cover. Medlemsolycksfall fritid terms, January 2026.

Ask:

  • Does the policy cover work, leisure time or both?
  • Does it cover the activity I was doing?
  • Are there special rules for travel to and from work or the club's activities?
  • Was I enrolled and within the policy's age limits when the accident happened?

Cover around the clock does not mean every activity is insured. If's accident insurance terms from April 2026, for example, exclude certain sports and activities. See Section 5.6 of If's terms.

If the accident has already happened, ask for the terms that apply to that claim. The latest version on the website may not be the version for your policy period. If explains which terms are used when assessing claims.

Map your cover and report to the right insurers

Make a separate note for each policy. Use this template to compare them without mixing up sums insured, expenses and the scope of cover.

Information Complete for each policy
Insurance Insurer, product name and policy number or group agreement.
Enrolment Your own policy, employer, union or club. Were you covered on the date of the accident?
When it applies Working hours, leisure time, around the clock or a particular activity.
Benefits Medical disability compensation, expenses and other relevant benefits.
Amounts and restrictions Sum insured, cost limits, age rules and relevant exclusions.
Contact and follow-up How to report, claim number, contact person and next step.

Then use your overview as follows:

  1. Report to the insurers whose cover may apply. Describe the same event accurately and consistently. If you are unsure about the scope of cover, ask the insurer to assess it.
  2. Gather the evidence. Record the date, place, sequence of events, injury and when you sought medical care. Keep receipts and the documents the insurer requests. These include the kinds of details in Folksam's claim reporting instructions.
  3. Disclose other policies and payments. State which insurer has paid, the amount and what the payment covers. Ask how any remaining expenses should be handled.
  4. Follow each claim separately. Keep decisions and requests for further information with the relevant claim number. Reimbursement of expenses does not necessarily mean that permanent injury compensation has been fully assessed.

Report the accident even if it is not yet clear whether the effects will be permanent. If's terms, for example, distinguish between reporting a claim promptly and disability compensation, which can normally be assessed only later, once the condition has stabilised. See Sections 4.4 and 8 of If's terms.

If it is an occupational injury, also follow the reporting process for the relevant work injury cover. At Afa Försäkring, the general rule is that the injured employee reports the injury and applies for compensation. The employer's report to Försäkringskassan, the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, is a separate part of the process. Afa Försäkring's reporting guide.

Example: reporting the same fall to two insurers

This is a hypothetical example. The amounts and assumptions are chosen to illustrate the principle, not the terms of any particular policy. All amounts are in Swedish kronor, SEK.

Sara slips during a walk in her leisure time and injures her wrist. She has her own accident policy and a group policy through her trade union with another insurer. In this example, both are active, cover the walk and include medical disability compensation.

Sara reports the accident to both insurers and tells each about the other policy.

Suppose she has SEK 1,000 of eligible expenses and receives the full amount from the first insurer. She reports that payment to the second insurer and does not ask for another SEK 1,000 for the same expenses. The possibility of receiving compensation from several personal insurance policies does not allow double reimbursement of treatment costs. If explains personal insurance and cost reimbursement.

Later, Sara still has restricted movement. For this calculation only, assume that both insurers assess five per cent medical disability and that each payment is proportional, without any deductions or additional payments:

  • Her own policy: SEK 1,000,000 × 5% = SEK 50,000.
  • The group policy: SEK 500,000 × 5% = SEK 25,000.

The total disability compensation is therefore SEK 75,000, separate from reimbursement of her expenses.

In a real claim, each insurer makes its own assessment. You cannot assume the same disability percentage or calculation method, and age rules or other terms may affect the amounts. Konsumenternas explains how disability compensation is calculated.

Are several accident policies unnecessary?

That depends on what the additional policy provides and what it costs. Two policies may result in a higher combined payment for permanent disability. They may also complement each other by covering different times or activities. At the same time, extra premiums need to be weighed against the amounts, restrictions and your needs.

Konsumenternas notes that several policies can pay disability compensation, but you need to decide whether paying for them is worthwhile. Read its guidance on having two accident policies.

Compare the protection you would lose if one policy ended. Also check what happens if you change employer, end your membership or reach a particular age.

For a wider perspective, read insurAGI's guide to which insurance you need in Sweden, in Swedish. For accident insurance specifically, assess each benefit before deciding that an overlap is unnecessary.

Message template: ask the insurer to clarify your cover

Use this template when contacting the insurer, preferably through its secure account area. Also follow its instructions for formally reporting the claim. General information about your cover does not replace assessment of the individual injury.

Subject: Accident on [date] – insurance cover and other policies

Hello,

I had an accident on [date] when [brief description of the event and injury].

My policy number or group agreement is [number]. My claim number, if already assigned, is [number].

I may also be covered by [policy and insurer]. With that insurer, I have [not reported the claim/reported the claim/received a payment, stating the amount and what it covers].

Please help me clarify the following:

  • Did the policy cover me and this particular event?
  • Which benefits may apply?
  • What evidence do you need now, and what will you need if I have lasting symptoms?
  • How should I disclose other policies and expenses that have already been reimbursed?
  • Which policy clauses, versions and deadlines apply to my claim?

Please confirm whether I need to do anything else to register the claim.

Kind regards,
