E-bike insurance in Sweden: does your home insurance cover the bike and battery?
Your Swedish home insurance may cover your e-bike and battery. Check payout limits, lock requirements and deductions to see whether the cover is enough.
Your Swedish home insurance may cover theft of both your e-bike and its battery. But being insured does not mean you will recover the full purchase price. Vehicle classification, payout limits, lock requirements, valuation rules and your excess all affect the outcome. Theft of the battery alone can also be covered. In Sweden, home insurance is called hemförsäkring. This guide focuses on its protection for your belongings. Find your policy schedule (försäkringsbrev) and the full terms for your insurance period, then work through the checks below. All amounts are in Swedish kronor (SEK), and the examples concern Swedish policies. The linked insurer and authority sources are in Swedish.
What is the maximum payout for your e-bike?
Search your terms for cykel (bicycle), högsta ersättning (maximum compensation) and tillbehör (accessories). A high overall sum insured for your belongings does not automatically mean the same cover applies to your bicycle.
Check whether the limit applies per bicycle or per incident, and whether the battery and accessories share that limit.
| Theft of a bicycle parked outdoors, without a specific add-on | Cover limit |
|---|---|
| If Hemförsäkring Extra and Stor hemförsäkring, December 2025 terms | SEK 35,000 per bicycle, including accessories. |
| Folksam Hemförsäkring Bas, Mellan and Stor, January 2026 terms | SEK 20,000 per incident, regardless of the number of bicycles. |
These are limits, not guaranteed payouts. Valuation, your excess and other conditions affect compensation. See If's full terms and Folksam's full terms.
Storage location can change the limit. For example, Folksam states limits of SEK 40,000 with Bas and SEK 80,000 with Mellan or Stor following forcible entry into an attic or basement storage unit. These limits also apply per incident and may be shared with other stolen belongings. Source: Folksam's bicycle insurance guidance.
If the limit is too low, ask specifically about extending bicycle cover. Do not assume that accidental damage cover (allrisk or drulle) solves this: If excludes bicycles from the ordinary otursskydd in Extra and Stor, while a separate specified-item policy can provide wider cover. Does your bicycle lock meet the policy requirements?
Insurers have different requirements. Folksam's reviewed terms require a locking device approved by SSF Stöldskyddsföreningen, the Swedish Theft Prevention Association. If another type of lock was used, compensation is normally reduced by 50%. If the bicycle was unlocked, normally no compensation is paid. Source: Folksam's terms, A23 and A26.
By contrast, If says the bicycle must be locked but does not require a particular lock type. It recommends an approved bicycle lock. This illustrates the difference between a policy requirement and theft-prevention advice. Source: If's lock guidance.
Check your lock in three steps:
- Identify it. Find the manufacturer and exact model on the lock, packaging or purchase documentation.
- Read the requirement. Identify the standard, class or approval your insurer specifies.
- Check the model. Use the registers linked by SSF, such as SBSC's certification register. Ask your insurer to confirm compliance if the model variant is unclear.
The lock securing the battery is separate from the bicycle lock. A locked battery does not establish that the bicycle itself is adequately locked.
Locking the frame to a fixed object is theft-prevention advice. Check separately whether your policy also requires it. Source: SSF's lock guide.
Does insurance cover a stolen e-bike battery?
The answer depends on your policy and the circumstances. Check three situations separately.
The whole bicycle is stolen with the battery
Check that the valuation includes the battery and whether accessories share the bicycle limit. If explicitly includes batteries and accessories in its e-bike cover. The battery therefore does not automatically provide additional cover above the bicycle limit. Source: If's bicycle insurance guidance.
Only the battery is stolen from the bicycle
Battery-only theft is not universally excluded. If's e-bike guidance explicitly says its home insurance covers theft of an e-bike battery.
If recommends taking the battery with you when possible, particularly during longer stops and overnight. It also says you do not have to remove it every time you park. A recommendation should therefore not automatically be treated as an absolute condition for compensation.
Check whether your own insurer requires the battery to be locked in place and whether additional security or care requirements (aktsamhetskrav) apply.
A detached battery is stolen elsewhere
Describe the actual storage arrangements: inside your home, in a communal bicycle room, in your own storage unit or at work.
Ask which policy clause applies, what security the space requires, and whether the battery falls under the bicycle limit or another limit. A general statement that "the battery is included" does not answer every scenario.
Also distinguish theft from reduced battery capacity, wear and other faults. Theft cover alone does not establish cover for those problems.
How do age deductions and your excess affect the payout?
Your excess (självrisk, also called a deductible) is the part of a covered claim you pay yourself. An age deduction (åldersavdrag) reduces compensation to reflect an item's age. You need to check both, alongside the valuation rules. Folksam, for example, states bicycle-theft excesses of SEK 1,800 for Bas and Mellan and SEK 900 for Stor. Source: Folksam's bicycle insurance guidance.
The following is a hypothetical illustration, not a calculation under a particular insurer's terms. Assume the whole bicycle and battery are stolen, the lock requirements are met, and valuation starts with the cost of a new equivalent bicycle.
| Calculation step | Amount |
|---|---|
| New equivalent bicycle, including battery | SEK 45,000 |
| Assumed age deduction: 30% | −SEK 13,500 |
| Value after the age deduction | SEK 31,500 |
| Assumed payout limit caps this at | SEK 30,000 |
| Assumed excess, deducted after applying the limit | −SEK 1,500 |
| Payout | SEK 28,500 |
The owner needs to contribute SEK 16,500 to buy the new equivalent bicycle. That gap comprises the age deduction, the effect of the limit and the excess. The battery is counted only once.
Both the percentage and calculation order are assumptions. Ask your insurer for a calculation for your bicycle, including any separate battery valuation.
Is your e-bike legally a bicycle in Sweden?
According to Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency, an electrically assisted bicycle counts as a bicycle when its motor:
- only assists pedalling or operation of the crank mechanism;
- provides no assistance above 25 km/h;
- has a continuous rated power of no more than 250 watts.
The speed threshold concerns motor assistance. Coasting or pedalling faster than 25 km/h does not, by itself, change the classification.
A vehicle outside these requirements may instead be classified as, for example, a moped. However, a more powerful motor or tuning kit does not automatically make it an approved moped. A Swedish class II moped requires type approval or approval through a moped inspection. Source: Transportstyrelsen's class II moped guidance.
If your vehicle is a moped, check moped insurance and the obligation to hold compulsory motor insurance (trafikförsäkring). That compulsory insurance does not itself cover theft of your vehicle. Check theft cover separately. Source: Trafikförsäkringsföreningen (TFF).

| Maximum compensation: per bicycle or per incident? | Bicycle section and cover limits | … |
| Battery and accessories | Policy terms and written confirmation from the insurer | … |

If anything is unclear, ask:
- "How much could you pay if my bicycle and battery were stolen together?"
- "Is battery-only theft covered when the battery is locked onto the bicycle?"
- "What applies when I keep the battery in my storage unit?"
- "Does lock model [model name] meet your requirements?"
- "In what order do you apply valuation, the payout limit and the excess?"
Keep the frame number, battery serial number, photos and proof of purchase. For more on documenting ownership, see our guide to home insurance claims without a receipt (in Swedish).
